A garden built to produce and to sell
A market garden grows a lot of food on a small area, usually for direct sale through farmers markets, CSA shares, restaurants, or a farm stand. Getting the setup right at the start saves countless hours later. Soil Solutions designs productive market gardens for small farms and homesteads.
We look at sun, slope, soil, water, access, and where you will wash, pack, and store produce, then build a layout that keeps work efficient.
What we set up
Typical work includes standardized permanent beds, paths sized for your tools, irrigation laid out by block, compost and amendment planning, crop rotation, and harvest planning so you have steady product to sell through the season. In colder parts of Northern Nevada and the mountains, season extension with low tunnels or hoop houses can matter a lot; in hot valleys, shade and water timing do.
We start with soil testing so beds are built on solid information, and can supply custom microbial amendments to get biology going.
Organic from the start
Many market gardens plan to grow organically from day one. We can help set things up with organic practices in mind and point you toward the next steps if you plan to pursue certification. Whether you are starting on a quarter acre or expanding an existing operation, reach out to talk about your plans.
Getting started
Every project begins with a conversation. Tell us about your land, what you are growing or raising, and what you want to change. From there we usually recommend a site visit and, in most cases, soil testing, so the plan for market garden setup is built on what is actually happening on your ground. You will get clear recommendations and an honest sense of what to do first, what can wait, and how our other services might fit in.
