Valley soils and climate
The valley has a Mediterranean climate: cool, wet winters and long, hot, dry summers. Soils range from deep, fertile river-deposited loams to heavy clays and hardpan areas. Long hot summers can burn through soil organic matter, and much of the year's rain arrives in a few months, so covering soil in winter and holding moisture are important.
Many valley farms rely on irrigation from surface water or groundwater, and efficient water use is increasingly a priority.
