Erosion Control

Erosion control that keeps soil in place: contour work, check structures, cover, and revegetation after fire or disturbance in Northern California and Northern Nevada.

Keeping your soil where it belongs

Topsoil takes a very long time to build and can be lost in a single storm. Gullies on a ranch road, sheet erosion on bare fields, and slumping banks all mean soil and nutrients leaving your land. Soil Solutions helps landowners slow and stop erosion with approaches that also build soil and hold water.

Erosion is a common challenge in Northern California and Northern Nevada, where intense winter storms fall on ground that has been dry for months, and where wildfire can leave slopes bare.

How we approach it

The first step is finding out where the water is coming from and why it is moving soil. Often the fix is upstream: spreading concentrated flow before it gains speed, rather than armoring the place where damage shows up. Tools include contour swales and berms, rock and brush check structures in small drainages, careful road and culvert drainage, mulching and covering bare soil, and planting deep-rooted grasses, shrubs, and trees to hold ground over the long term.

After fire, grading, or construction, quick cover and revegetation can make a big difference before the rains come.

Part of a bigger plan

Erosion control works best alongside water harvesting, earthworks, and soil regeneration, so the land holds more water and grows more cover every year. Work in or near streams and wetlands can require permits from county, state, or federal agencies; we will talk through what may apply on your site. Contact us for a site visit.

Getting started

Every project begins with a conversation. Tell us about your land, what you are growing or raising, and what you want to change. From there we usually recommend a site visit and, in most cases, soil testing, so the plan for erosion control is built on what is actually happening on your ground. You will get clear recommendations and an honest sense of what to do first, what can wait, and how our other services might fit in.
